Wandering in the Field Collection

Program:

In 2008, the Special Collections & Archives department at the University of California, Riverside was selected to participate in the Local History Digital Resources Project (LHDRP). This statewide program seeks to preserve and provide permanent public access to local history digital resources.

As part of the LHDRP, Special Collections & Archives received grant funding to scan two hundred images from the Avery E. Field collection and make them accessible over the Internet. The images contained in this collection represent an important source of local history as they provide visual documentation of the growth and development of Riverside, California in the first half of the 20th century. A significant portion of this collection is comprised of images featuring local residents and their involvement in various events such as parades, celebrations, and weddings. The architectural history of the city is also well documented as there are images of both residential and commercial buildings including approximately 1,000 images of the famed Mission Inn Hotel. Additionally, the collection includes portraits of local families, images of the region’s geographic landscapes, and photographs of locally owned artwork. The Special Collections & Archives staff conferred with an advisory group comprised of local historians, librarians, and archivists to ensure that a representative sample of this collection and images not currently available to the local community were selected for digitization.

This presentation of Wandering in the Field Collection has been designed to provide the audience with an overview of the Avery E. Field collection that is housed in Special Collections & Archives at the University of California, Riverside. A selection of the local history images digitized as part of this project will be showcased and the audience will be asked to participate in the identification of images where no such information is available or is minimal.  We will also discuss the life of Avery E. Field who was not only the premier commercial photographer in Riverside for the first half of the 20th century, but also the individual responsible for the creation of this magnificent collection. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this visual journey through the Riverside of yesteryear!

Gordon Stewart Northcott and the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders

Program:

Jeff Paul, author of a new biography on Gordon Stewart Northcott, will discuss his new book and research into this twisted aspect of Riverside's history.  Northcott, a pedophile who was ultimately convicted of murdering 3 boys on his ranch in Wineville (now Mira Loma), attracted nationwide attention to this area in 1928 - 1930 during his much-publicized trial.  Many articles have been written about the case, but they've all been superficial.  Paul has spent more than 15 years researching and documenting the case, and his new book Nothing Is Strange With You proves it.  Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing afterwards.
