Dear RHS, I’m hoping you can help me learn more about a strange incident that happened in San Bernardino in May, 1909.
A woman named Gladys Wilkerson was tortured and stabbed by her lover, an “educated Indian”, named Frank Lugo. Contemporary newspapers claim that her injuries were the result of some kind of ritual in which he burned her and cut patterns into her body “resembling the figures carved on cliffs and in caves of the desert”. Lugo escaped and disappeared, but Wilkerson survived, and described what sounds like a kinky relationship rather than an occult ritual.
I’ve collected a number of clippings from the San Francisco Chronicle, The Capital Journal, The Los Angeles Times, Vancouver Daily World, Spokane Press, Santa Ana Register, etc., but they print more or less the same stories. Do you have any information about Lugo and Wilkerson? Was he ever captured? Maybe a local newspaper covered it in more detail?
I will pay any research, copying or postage fees related to my request; drop me a note and I’ll send a check.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Robert Schneck
